Whilst the supporters of overpaid blokes who kick a leather ball around get all hot under the collar about whether the latest broken toenail, or some such, of one of the England team will scupper their chances in the World Cup (and so lets all talk about 1966 again endlessly cos we haven’t got a life or a chance of winning) and the the rest watch mindlessly the F1 championship in the middle of the night (you have to do that you know so that you can text your mates and let them know you are watching it live – give me a break)…….
…. the rest of us who have got a life and like to watch entertaining sport on the TV are left wondering, with seven British riders in the World Superbikes (WSB) championships this year, one of whom won the World Supersports championship last year – yes that’s right we have a British champion in motorcycle racing (but most will have not heard the name Cal Crutchlow) why you can only watch WSB on British Eurosport?
And so my Fireblade owning Brother (he told me to say that and he’s a good bloke so I don’t mind) were discussing this very fact the other day and were wondering Why haven’t the BBC or ITV not bought any rights?
Even if its highlights they could at least broadcast it.
Lets face it there is more chance (and there was with only one or two Brits in it) of there being another British World Champion in motorcycling than there is of England winning the World Cup and yet come the season all the people of this country who have not been brainwashed at birth will be wondering whether a) they can watch their favourite TV programmes and b) whether they can have a pint in their favourite boozer without it being turned into a mini football match.
I can feel myself turning grumpy all ready at the prospect.
Mind you the roads will be empty so plenty of chance for some sunny evening scratching. Cos did you read we are going to have a BBQ summer?! …I digress…
Aside from that the excitement of the racing itself which always provides plenty of close racing and spills, (you do remember overtaking don’t you?) not at all processional like a certain other sport I’ve already mentioned.
In last weekends second round of the WSB championships from Portimao, there were Brits on the podium in both races, including the aforementioned Crutchlow, and the championship is currently being led by Brit Leon Haslem.
We could all be cheering the Brits on to victory given the chance.
So why don’t we have World Superbikes on the main BBC or ITV channels then?
I would love to know the answer?
could’nt agree more tiny WSB snippets(1/2 hour progamme in the middle of the night) where they spend most of the time telling you who won the last race, talk of superpole then add breaks if your lucky you get to see 10 mins of racing, whilst tedious F1 gets hours and hours of replays via the red button 2 hours of people following each other at high speed yawn!!
