The Curse Of The Eurosport Director

· 1 Comment · Motorcycle Racing

Whilst I am normally beside myself with happiness at this time of year – not only is the weather improving and trips on the motorbike become rather more pleasurable than in the long, wet and cold winter months, but also the motorcycle racing season has started.

Joy unbounded, except….

…there’s a blot on the landscape…

…it’s that old chestnut that I have written about before, on these pages, and that is the ‘Curse of the Eurosport director’ .

Why, oh why, when we are in the middle of watching a race with racers battling for position and indeed the lead, must we endlessly watch fallen riders trudging across the kitty litter, marshalls talking to said riders and various WAGs and crews in the pits?

Now I’m not against the odd quick re-run of an off or indeed the reaction of the crew, but this year it seems to have been taken to a whole new level with almost more air time being given over to the various fallers and what they are doing than actual race coverage.

Is it just me? Or is everyone else shouting at the TV “get back to the racing”?

Even the commentators, not generally known for actually observing everything that’s going on whilst regaling us with some anecdote or another, are even starting to mention about getting back to the race coverage.

So, what’s going on?

Couldn’t we watch detailed coverage (if indeed it is needed) after the race has finished?

Anyone care to comment? Do you agree? Do you care?

On a more positive note, the World Superbikes is living up to expectations as far as Brit riders are concerned and even some I didn’t expect to be battling at the front are adding to the excitement, such as Biaggi and teammate Camier. It really is anyone’s title for the winning and how exciting is that?

In British Superbikes, with new rules seeing those with the fastest times in Race 1, lining up first on the grid for Race 2 and various riders seeing trying out how indestructible they and their bikes are (not very), plus F2 sidecar racing coverage and a woman (yes folks women motorcycle racers) qualifying high up on the grid, what’s not to like?

Meanwhile in Moto GP, we have old hand Casey Stoner of which much is expected this season, riding like a novice and binning it when leading the race and handing the win to Rossi, like he needs it!

But, Moto GP rookie Ben Spies is showing the old hands that they need to be very afraid. He’s certainly got everyone’s attention and has achieved more in terms of his finishing position, in one race, than Toseland achieved in two years!
