About a month ago I received an email about a chap called Ron Holland who in 2010 plans to smash the motorcycle land speed record at Bonneville Speed Week by travelling in excess of 400mph on his 1,000 brake horsepower V8.
I always like these stories of ordinary folk doing the extraordinary particularly when it involves motorcycles and also when the person is fulfilling a lifelong ambition and is getting on a bit shall we say. (I’m sure Ron won’t mind me saying that)
Anyhow to cut a longish story short we ended up in a workshop in deepest Bedfordshire to have a look at the beast (the bike not Ron).
This was like no other workshop and we met Ron’s chief engineer, Roger, who was busily fabricating new parts with a knowledge, skill and precision that sadly may well die out with this generation.
Both Ron and Roger were keen to show us, and chat to us about, the V8 bike that will be used for the land speed record and a very enjoyable morning was spent talking about everything motorbikes – great stuff!
Pete was particularly chuffed when a hidden gem emerged from under one of the dustsheets and revealed one of the other projects in progress that he remembered from his youth.
Ron has been dragging bikes for a while and the engine is constantly being developed to improve speed output. The intention being to run the bike at Santa Pod to test it before the traditional cigar shaped skin is fitted for the land speed record attempt.
Think of Burt Munro – World’s Fastest Indian – and you’ll get an inkling of the kind of determination Ron has in making this happen. Having met him and some of his team I believe they will make it happen.
Ron’s land speed record attempt, on his motorbike “Enigma”, will be bringing the land speed record back to the UK and would be a real achievement not only for Ron but a triumph for British engineering and ingenuity.
As is often the case, Ron’s campaign needs some help in the form of sponsorship to make it a reality.
This can be in the form of a £10 donation which will keep you in touch with regular information as the project develops, right through to the 400mph Enigma Club where you get to be seriously involved in the project and go to Bonneville and watch Ron bring the motorcycle land speed record back to the UK.

Remember Burt Munro in the World’s Fastest Indian?
He had the skill and the determination but without the help of people like you and me his dream may not have become a reality.

Maybe we’ll see you in Bonneville!
