Cal Crutchlow_pole at MonzaWorld Superbikes

Racing fans look set to be in for a treat as tomorrow’s Monza World Superbikes races look set to be close with the first three qualifiers being within 6/10 of a second.

There was an upset in Superpole one as Brit Leon Haslem languished in 17th putting him on the 5th row of the grid for the race. He reportedly has had some problems already this weekend with his Stiggy Honda breaking down during practice.

BMW riders Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus managed to pull something out of the bag to ensure that they both got to qualify for Superpole two, most likely they used one of their two qualifying tyres in the first session after losing out in previous rounds.

Carlos Checa was the unfortunate loser in Superpole two, after looking secure in 8th, when Haga put in a last minute stonking qualifying lap that moved him up into 2nd place in the top eight relegating Checa to 9th and thus out of Superpole three.

Japanese riders Yukio Kagayama and Ruichi Kiyonari both looked promising for a front row start after their performances in Superpoles one and two, but in the end Kagayama had no more qualifiers but Kiyo did not disappoint and was momentarily in pole position after putting in what looked to be an unbeatable lap and new lap record. However, mere seconds later both Michel Fabrizio and then Ben Spies also scored new lap records with Spies getting his fifth pole position in as many rounds.

Tomorrows race promises to be a real bun fight – with Fabrizio wanting to win on his home track, Spies wanting to score more points after his off in the second race at Assen and Nori (starting from a surprising 5th) wanting to increase his points haul – c’mon!
