Have you ever thought what you would do if you accidentally had a fire in your garage?
No, me neither until I read recently the unfortunate story of a garage fire in Oxfordshire where the owners five vintage motorbikes were destroyed in the blaze, which was thought to be accidental, how awful.

Not only that but the owner was burnt on his face and arms.
His collection of vintage motorbikes would be hard to replace, even though I am sure he is insured, as the owner had built them up to award winning standard from boxes of bits.
The fire was made worse by the kind of inflammable materials that we motorcycle mechanics tend to have in our garages, items such as tyres, aerosol cans, paint, thinners and not forgetting petrol.
Sometimes accidents just do happen and before you know where you are your garage and your pride and joy can be going up in flames.
It’s not just the likes of you and me whose motorcycle collections are susceptible to fire, who can forget the NEC National Motorcycle Museum fire and the devastation that caused to lots of irreplacable motorcycles?
Well if you don’t have a garage or a motorcycle collection the size of Jay Leno or the motorcycle museum, then I’m guessing that a water sprinkler system is out of the question, so how about investing in a fire extinguisher or two?
The best type to buy is one that will extinguish what are known as ABC fires:
- Type A Fires (carbonaceous or organic materials, such as wood, paper, fabric, etc.)
- Type B Fires (liquid fires, such as petrol, diesel, fats, paints, solvents, etc.)
- Type C Fires (flammable gases such as butane, propane, natural gas, stc.)
- and are suitable for use on live electrical equipment up to 1000V
Halfords have a 1kg extinguisher that covers all of these eventualities at a very reasonable £32.99 and you can order online.

If you want something smaller, maybe for inside a vehicle transporting motorcycles or if you ride in fear of having a fire then a handy 450g mini extinguisher, also filled with ABC powder, could be what you need.
It is a one use only fire extinguisher and costs £12.99 from White Dog Bikes
Be careful out there!
Fire is such a strong adversary that most people are often defeated, left only with nothing but painful memories. Knowledge and preparation is one’s most effective weapons against fires. Gina
